DNS Blacklists have a rather long history in web terms, with the first one being created in 1997. Called the RBL, its purpose was to block spam email and to educate Internet service providers and other websites about spam and its related problems. Although modern DNS Blacklists are rarely used as educational tools, their function as an email blocker and filter still serves as their primary purpose to this day.

Almost all of today's email servers support at least one DNSBL to reduce the amount of junk mail clients using their service receive. The three basic components that make up a DNS Blacklist - a domain name to host it under, a server to host that domain, and a list of addresses to publish to the list - also haven't changed from the time when the RBL was first created to today.

DNSBL is a Domain Name Blacklist. There are dozens of DNSBLs online, all of which use a wide variety of criteria for listing and delisting addresses. Spam filters utilize various DNSBLs to verify that the incoming emails do not originate from blacklisted sites. DNSBLs are generally the first line of defense against spam.

SURBLs (no longer an acronym) are generally the second line of defense but not all spam filters are capable of using them. SURBLs are blacklists of websites that have been noted for appearing in unsolicited emails. Spam filters that can utilize the SURBLs will scan the body text of emails and extract any website addresses and check them against the blacklists. If an address is found, the message will be flagged as spam and handled accordingly.

If spam hits a website, then search engines (Google, Bing, and Yahoo) also blacklist your website's IP address for security reasons. If your website or blog is getting deindexed from search engines or if you see a decline in your organic traffic, then you must use SEO Tool's free Blacklist IP Lookup tool to check whether your website is blacklisted or not.

Blacklisted Sites: There are thousands of databases on the internet that maintain lists of' abusive hosts'. Email service providers and ISPs look at these lists to protect their users from potential malware, viruses, or other nasty stuff.

How do business sites get blacklisted?

There can be several reasons for business websites getting blacklisted.

  • If your mail servers are pumping out an unusually high volume of mail.
  • If your server is relaying spam mail.
  • If spam filter sites detect a high bounce rate.
  • If your emails are graphic and flash animation heavy.
  • If your email attachments contain malware.

What happens when your site is blacklisted?

Google quarantines around 10,000 unsecured websites every day and puts them on a “Google blacklist”. Unfortunately, if the website or IP address is found on the blacklists, the search engine will display a warning message that the site is not secure. The browser may even be blocked from allowing the visitor to view the page. Additionally, most search engines will delist a page that is found on blacklists.

If a website is found with such vulnerabilities, the browser displays security warnings and informs the visitors that it is unsafe to visit. Also blacklisted websites lose almost 95% of their organic traffic.

How to Remove an IP Address from a Blacklist?

  • Identify the blacklist(s) with Blacklist Lookup OR Safe Browsing by Google
  • Request Removal from the Blacklist Operator
  • Break the Blacklisting Cycle

Rebuilding after suffering these negative effects can be extremely difficult. However, it’s entirely possible to rescue your site from failure. If you're able to find out why you were blacklisted, you can try to get it reversed (You may want to work with someone technically savvy to better help you). There are a few blacklists with a self-service removal feature that lets you take your IP address off the list without much trouble. This can be a technical process but you will need to go to each list’s site to look for a place to request to appeal/review your site.

For example, if you found your site was listed on the sorbs list, you would go to their website and request them to Review. The majority of blacklists have a built-in, automated procedure that removes lower-level listings (IP addresses that are light offenders) within a week or two. But if the IP address had sent spam more than once or did a high volume, the period will be longer.
